Q3 Technology Focus: Data Center Tech Advances
Skanska has been working with a series of companies focused on creating what it claims is the first integrated data architecture that allows companies to connect business and IT initiatives to the underlying costs and growth requirements for energy and infrastructure. The platform integrates software developer OSIsoft’s PI system, which collects and manages millions of data points across different kinds of systems, from individual facilities to smart cities. The platform ensures optimum performance through the Design, Construction, Commissioning and Operations. The PI System compiles real-time information from any kind of infrastructure asset as well as business systems, workflow tools and external data such as market data, utility rates and GIS data. Skanska has extended this platform with real time optimization algorithms, to correlate behavior and performance; reducing resource use by continuously adapting to changes like environment, equipment performance and building load.
The partnership focuses on three key areas: optimizing efficiency of energy, water and infrastructure; creating dynamic feedback loops to drive more efficient design and lower the cost of building; and driving greater reliability of mission-critical systems by leveraging timely and trustworthy data to optimize maintenance and operations. The integrated platform is spear headed by Paul Deronde of Energy Metrics and is installed on a growing number of global clients.

Dam Removal Feature
Elwha and Glines Canyon Dams, built on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State about 100 years ago, are now coming down, under terms of a federal agreement signed in 1992. The goal is to restore in an environmentally responsible fashion the highly productive salmon run wiped out by the original construction. It won't be easy--with 18 million cu yds of sediment trapped behind the dams. There are several studies being carried out that are designed to discover lessons learned that can be applied to thousands of dams in the U.S. that have outlived their usefulness and are targets for removal.

Water Report: Fracking and Groundwater
The common perception is that the large reserves of natural gas locked in shale gas formations around the world hold too much potential to ignore. Still, the findings from some studies on fracking have been troubling, suggesting that hydraulic fracturing and the production of natural gas wells could lead to environmental problems such as groundwater contamination if not handled properly. This water report will look at some of the latest research into the impact of fracking and well production on groundwater, as well as what engineering firms can do to ensure that the process for tapping plentiful natural gas resources is done safely and without harming the environment. The report will describe engineering solutions that can prevent these projects from harming groundwater.

Project Focus
New Jersey
St. Peter’s College in Jersey City is getting a two-pronged facelift by building a new $35-million student center, largely using recycled and renewable materials, as well as a $4-million energy hub that includes a cogen facility and four separate solar rooftop arrays. The project, which began June 2011, is progressing and targeted for completion in first quarter 2013. Located on the southeast corner of the campus, the center is being built while the campus is in use and has taken safety precautions, such as added fencing, to protect the many student and faculty passers-by who either live or work in the buildings situated nearby. The 200 kw cogen plant and 200 kw solar arrays will be used to heat and power the student center. St. Peter’s College is the owner and Strategic Development Group is the owner’s agent for both the center and cogen facility. Torcon Inc. is the GC on the center, and Birdsall Services Group is the civil, electrical and mechanical engineer and landscape architect on the center, as well as the engineer for the cogen unit. Ener-G is the developer, owner and operator of the cogen unit and the solar arrays.
Renovation
It’s been 40 years since Long Beach High School in Lido Beach, N.Y., has undergone any significant renovation but this is about to change with construction well under way to add about 20,000-sq-ft to the three-story structure; demolish a separate pre-K building; and build new outdoor sports facilities on campus. The $17-million project, which is set for completion in 2014, is among the largest ones under way as part of the Long Beach City Schools’ $98.9-million capital improvement program. The project has many technical, engineering, financial and logistical challenges including the fact that the high school is located just 30 feet from a large body of water and requires constant dewatering. The general contractor is Stalco Construction and Savin Engineers is the CM. Other key players are the architect CS Arch; structural engineer Ryan-Biggs Associates; MEP engineer Lewis Engineering; civil engineer The Chazen Companies; and athletic facilities consultant HMH Site & Sports Design.
